YOUR BUSINESS. YOUR FAMILY. YOUR COVERAGE.
Health coverage for the way you work
Working for yourself means making your own decisions—including how to protect your health and budget. Independent Health Plans helps self-employed Texans, independent contractors, freelancers, and small business owners compare health insurance options with personal guidance from Bill Brann.
Bill offers ACA Marketplace plans, also known as Obamacare, as well as non-ACA alternatives and supplemental coverage. Your conversation starts with your needs, then a clear explanation of how each option works.
Compare three parts of a coverage strategy
ACA / Obamacare plans
ACA Marketplace plans provide comprehensive health coverage, including prescription drugs, and cover pre-existing conditions. Eligible households may qualify for financial assistance based on income, household size, and other requirements.
Bill can help you compare available plans, doctor networks, prescription coverage, deductibles, and total costs.
Non-ACA alternatives
These products have different benefits and protections from ACA major medical coverage. Depending on the policy, they may pay scheduled benefits, have waiting periods or exclusions, and leave you responsible for charges above the benefits paid.
Explore ACA alternatives and their limitations before deciding whether an option fits your situation.
Supplemental protection
Supplemental policies may be paired with an ACA plan to add benefits for covered events such as accidents or specified illnesses. Benefits depend on the policy and do not eliminate every out-of-pocket expense.
Review supplemental, dental, and vision options. Supplemental coverage is separate from your primary health plan.
What makes health insurance affordable for you?
A monthly premium is only one part of the picture. For a self-employed person, the right comparison also considers what you could pay when you need care and how those expenses fit your cash flow.
- Your preferred doctors, hospitals, and local provider networks.
- Your prescriptions, covered drug lists, and pharmacy costs.
- Premiums, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
- Your spouse’s and children’s coverage needs.
- Potential financial assistance and enrollment eligibility.
- Whether optional supplemental benefits are worth the additional premium.
Income changes? Keep your Marketplace application current.
Self-employment income can vary. Marketplace applications use expected income for the coverage year, including net self-employment income and other required household income. Updating your application when your circumstances change helps keep financial assistance aligned with your situation.
Bill can explain the coverage application process. For help calculating business income or tax consequences, consult your tax professional. See HealthCare.gov’s self-employment income guidance.

Self-employed health insurance questions
Can I get ACA coverage if I’m self-employed?
Yes. Self-employed individuals can apply for individual and family Marketplace coverage. Plan availability, financial assistance, and enrollment eligibility depend on your circumstances. You do not need a traditional employer to explore these options.
Can I combine an ACA plan with supplemental insurance?
Yes. Bill can review supplemental options alongside your ACA coverage. A supplemental policy pays according to its own terms; it does not change your ACA plan’s deductible, network, or covered benefits. Review both policies and the combined premium.
Can I enroll at any time?
ACA Marketplace enrollment generally takes place during Open Enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify. Eligibility and timing for non-ACA and supplemental products vary. Bill can help you check the rules that apply to the coverage you are considering.
What should I have ready for a coverage review?
Have your ZIP code, ages of family members needing coverage, preferred doctors, prescription list, and an estimate of household income for the coverage year. Share sensitive information only through an appropriate secure application process.
Let’s review your options
Tell Bill that you are self-employed and whether you need coverage for yourself or your family. He can help you compare ACA plans, explain alternatives, and discuss supplemental protection where appropriate.
Coverage, benefits, costs, eligibility, and availability vary by carrier, policy, and location. Non-ACA limited-benefit and supplemental policies are not substitutes for comprehensive major medical insurance. Review the specific policy documents before enrolling.
